Adopt A Pyr
Great Pyrenees dogs are loyal, independent, and deeply devoted to their people. If you’re looking for a companion with a big heart (and an even bigger presence), a Pyr might be the perfect fit.
At Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue, we help match each dog with the right home—because the best adoptions are the ones that last a lifetime.
You can give a gentle giant the home they deserve.
-
Pyrs aren’t your average dog. They were bred to think for themselves, protect what they love, and thrive with space and purpose. They can be incredibly rewarding companions—but they do best with owners who understand their unique traits.
Independent and intelligent
Protective and watchful
Calm, but not low-maintenance
Thrive with patience, structure, and space
We’ll help you decide if a Pyr is the right match for you.
-
To set both our dogs and adopters up for success, we ask that potential homes meet a few basic guidelines.
To help ensure safe, successful, lifelong placements, we ask that adopters meet the following basic requirements:
Location: You must live within driving distance (approx. 4–5 hours) of Richmond, VA.
Fenced Yard: A secure, physical fence (minimum 4 feet) is required, as Pyrs are natural roamers.
Home Environment: All adopted companion Pyrs must live indoors as part of the family.*
Experience & Mindset: Great Pyrenees are independent, working dogs—not a beginner breed. We look for adopters who are willing to learn and prepared for their unique needs.
Veterinary Care: You must be able to provide regular, ongoing veterinary care.
Age Requirement: Adopters must be 25 years or older.
Current Pets: All existing pets in the home must be spayed or neutered.
If you’re close but not sure you meet every requirement, we still encourage you to reach out—we’re here to help guide you.
*If you are looking for a working dog, please contact us to discuss.

Our goal is simple: the right dog, in the right home, for life.
We focus on making the right match—not the fastest one. Our adoption process is thoughtful and designed to ensure every Pyr finds a stable, lifelong home. If you’re ready for that commitment, we’ll guide you every step of the way.
All dogs from AGPR are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested and on prevention, and evaluated for health and temperament before adoption.
Adoption fees are $400 for adults and $450 for puppies (under 12 months), helping us continue to care for and rescue Pyrs in need.
-
Every Pyr in our care has their own story—and their own needs. Some are ready to jump into family life, while others need a little extra time, training, or understanding.
