Who We Are
AGPR is a community of volunteers focused on one mission: giving Great Pyrenees dogs a safe place to land. Based in Richmond, Virginia, we operate through a combination of dedicated volunteers and paid team members who support daily care and operations.
We serve the surrounding region by connecting dogs in need with responsible, prepared adopters.
Our focus is simple—do right by the dogs, every single time.
What We Do
We rescue Great Pyrenees from shelters, owner surrenders, and other situations where they need help. Each dog receives medical care, evaluation, and support before being placed in a new home—or in some instances, finding sanctuary at AGPR for the duration of their life.
We also help reunite lost dogs with their families and provide guidance to owners who may need to rehome their Pyr.
Our work doesn’t stop at adoption—we remain a resource for the life of the dog.
The Dogs We Help
The dogs in our care come from a wide range of situations—strays, owner surrenders, legal seizures, and shelter transfers. Some are ready for home life right away, while others need time, training, or medical attention.
We are especially committed to taking in dogs who may be overlooked elsewhere. Each one is treated as an individual, with care tailored to their situation.

AGPR has spent more than two decades rescuing and rehoming Great Pyrenees dogs across our region.
During that time, AGPR has helped thousands of Great Pyrenees dogs find safety, care, and lasting homes. In recent years alone, we’ve taken in and placed dozens of dogs annually, with a consistently high lifesaving rate.
Each number represents a dog given a second chance—and a future that looks very different than where they started.

That’s why our process is thoughtful and thorough, focused on making the right match—not the fastest one.
Great Pyrenees are not a beginner breed, and we prioritize adopters who understand or are willing to learn their needs. We take the time to understand both our dogs and our adopters to ensure long-term success. Our process is intentionally structured to avoid impulse decisions and support lasting placements.
